Twelve South HoverBar Duo review: ultra flexible iPad stand
I recently bought an iPad mini 6 and was looking for a stand that would work with it as well as my old 11in iPad Pro. Enter the Twelve South HoverBar duo. It is flexible enough to be used with any model of iPad and many other electronic devices like your iPhone, Nintendo Switch, Kindle and everything in between.
It is called “Duo” because it comes with a weighted base and a shelf clip. The flexible arm allows you to place your iPad in just about any position. A ball joint with a button lets you rotate your iPad horizontally or vertically (or somewhere in between if that’s your thing.)

Twelve South HoverBar Duo: What is good
The Twelve South HoverBar Duo comes with a weighted base and tablet clamp, along with the hex keys you’ll need to swap them out and adjust the arm angles. The arm has three joints; the middle and bottom one require a hex wrench to adjust, while the joint attached to the iPad’s clip is a ball joint with a knob that you can turn by hand. The iPad clip adjusts to hold any device as small as five inches (like an iPhone or gaming device) or as large as the iPad Pro.
This gives you great flexibility whether you use your iPad (or other device) as a work companion alongside your Mac or as a standalone work / leisure device. Use it to keep your iPad in line with your eyes and splash-proof while you follow an onscreen recipe in the kitchen. Watch exercise videos in your home gym; your iPad will be safely out of the way but easily visible. Film all the creativity you do with your hands in your design studio. Read a book, watch a video, FaceTime your loved ones, whatever you love to do, do it hands-free.
This super adjustable device holder is more than just an iPad holder
In my testing, my iPad never tipped over. The base is quite heavy and even has a thoughtful slot where you can place your Apple Pencil or other stylus without having to worry about rolling it. To avoid sagging, you’ll need to be sure to tighten the button behind the iPad clip securely.
I was able to use my iPad mini in this holder, with and without a case. You should be able to keep your case as long as it’s on the thinnest side – no more than 8.68 inches wide and half an inch deep (or thick). The height does not matter because the clip only grabs the sides. Charging ports, speakers, and buttons are unobstructed, so your iPad is fully functional when using this stand.
Twelve South HoverBar Duo: What is not good
It is a bit pricey for what it is. If you don’t need that much flexibility, you might be better off going with a cheaper mount.
I’m not crazy about having to hold on to both hex wrench tools to make adjustments. You will need this for swapping out the desk base and shelf clamp, as well as adjusting the two bottom hinges.
When you tap the touchscreen, it vibrates slightly, even with the button and the joints tightened as firmly as possible. If you tap a lot, you might find it quite boring.
Twelve South HoverBar Duo: Competetion
If you’re looking for a more versatile mount, take a look at the Satechi aluminum hub and mount. While it doesn’t have the flexibility of the HoverBar Duo in terms of placement, it is also a hub with 4K HDMI, USB-C, and USB-A ports as well as an SD card slot.
However, for some cheaper options, we’ve rounded up the best iPad Air stands, which can actually be used with any model of iPad. The Yoobao Tablet Stand Multi-Angle Tablet Holder is simple, inexpensive, and holds your iPad from different angles. The Yohann iPad stand is a work of art carved from a single piece of wood. It cantilever your iPad at the perfect angle.
Twelve South HoverBar Duo: Should we buy it?
You should buy it if …
- You need a super flexible iPad stand
- You want to use it with devices of different sizes
- You want both a desk base and a shelf clip
You shouldn’t buy it if …
- Price is an issue
- If you find a slight vibration when you press annoying
- If you don’t want to use tools to make adjustments
If flexibility is what you need, this stand is for you. With both a desk base and a shelf clip, plus an endless number of angles you can use, this stand holds your iPad or other devices in any direction. However, if it is out of your price range, or if a slight vibration when tapping or using hex wrenches bothers you, this is not the holder for you.
The Twelve South HoverBar Duo lets you have your hands free and do just about anything you love to do with your iPad. Since it comes with a weighted desk base and a shelf clip, you have plenty of placement options. The ball joint socket and button on the back of the iPad clip along with two other joints give you unlimited angles. The clip fits between the size of an iPhone and the larger iPad Pro, so it can be used with a multitude of devices. Note that you will need to use the included hex keys to adjust the two bottom hinges and to switch between the shelf clip and the desk base. Also, some might find the slight vibration when you tap the screen of your iPad distracting.
